Janine Antoni’s new public sculpture, Whispering Through a Stone, will be unveiled in Coral Gables, FL on June 1, 2025.
Commissioned by the City of Coral Gables, Florida, the fabrication of the sculpture was facilitated by Urban Art Projects and the boulder was milled by Quarra Stone. Whispering Through a Stone is inspired by the design of a 19th century conversation chair. In Antoni’s sculpture, two smooth seats are carved into a rough boulder with a small hole passing through the dense matter. The hole carries the whisper of one seated person to the ear of another, allowing them to communicate intimately in a public space. Antoni hopes that her sculpture will become a site for ritualized connection between members of the community. Whispering Through A Stone invites you to make a connection.
On Sunday, June 1, a film screening of Antoni’s here-ing will take place at Coral Gables Art Cinema (260 Aragon Ave) at 4pm. Following the screening, there will be an artist talk and a 5-minute walk to the sculpture (332 Miracle Mile), where Whispering Through a Stone will be unveiled at 5:30pm. RSVP for the event here.
