Larry Clark - Vintage Prints 1962 – 1972 - Exhibitions - Luhring Augustine

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Larry Clark
Vintage Prints
September 12 – October 24, 1998

Luhring Augustine is pleased to announce an exhibition of vintage Larry Clark photographs from the famous books and portfolios of Tulsa and Teenage Lust as well as lost photos from the early sixties to mid-seventies never seen before.  The show is as a book critic once claimed of Tulsa in a 1971 review “a devastating portrait of an American tragedy” revisited.

The show was inspired by the discovery of a suitcase, which was lost for nearly two decades only to be re-discovered by an old friend of Clark’s.  Inside this suitcase, a virtual time capsule of sorts, were several vintage prints: iconic images from Tulsa and Teenage Lust as well as other out-takes from the books.  These black and white photos are all original to Clark’s active period in which he captured the imaginations and adolescent subcultures of the real life characters from his experiences in Oklahoma to New York.  Of the photographs to be included in this important collection some are unique  – such as the first print ever of the cover of Teenage Lust.

Larry Clark is a significant figure in contemporary art and film.  His work is included in important museum collections in the United States, Europe and Asia.  Clark's ground-breaking first feature film, Kids, was released in 1995 to critical acclaim.  Clark has just completed a new film, Another Day in Paradise that is currently being premiered in several international film festivals.
