Albert Oehlen - - Exhibitions - Luhring Augustine

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

ALBERT OEHLEN
November 10, 2001 – January 12, 2002
Opening reception November 10th, 6-8 pm.

Luhring Augustine is pleased to announce an exhibition of new work by Albert Oehlen from November 10, 2001 – January 12, 2002. This show will consist of nine new paintings and one large drawing. This will be Oehlen's seventh solo exhibition with Luhring Augustine.

Albert Oehlen's new paintings are multi-layered canvases of hand painted abstract gestures, found photos and computer generated images. Oehlen confidently uses an unlimited palette; colors as bold as fluorescent orange are unexpectedly integrated with muted tones. Abstract painting in spray paint, oil and acrylic, is layered on top of backdrops created from computer generated images printed on canvas. Found photos emerge from the background to create quixotic points of definition amongst spontaneous gestures. Oehlen depicts and associates seemingly unrelated images, which when combined form connections that give the paintings a stream of conscious story line.

A former student of Sigmar Polke and a veteran of the Cologne art school, Albert Oehlen has exhibited widely and has had significant solo shows at the Kestner Gesellschaft in Hannover, the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, The Renaissance Society, Chicago, the Deichtorhallen, Hamburg, IVAM Centre de Carme, Valencia, and Kunsthalle Basel.

In addition to this exhibition, Per Skarstedt Fine Art will simultaneously show an exhibition of Oehlen's Self-Portraits from 1984 – 2001. Per Skartstedt Fine Art is located at 1018 Madison Avenue at 75th street.
