Christopher Wool - - Exhibitions - Luhring Augustine

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Christopher Wool

November 8 - December 20, 1997

On November 8, Luhring Augustine will open a solo exhibition of Christopher Wool.  The exhibition will assemble a significant body of work, consisting of at least twelve recent paintings, as well as works on paper and photographs, [all shown for the first time in New York].

Completed during the course of the past year and a half, these paintings bring together the various techniques that Wool has developed over the past several years, including silkscreen, stencil, and spray paint. Both text and abstract paintings of varying dimensions will be included.

Since Christopher Wool’s last solo show in New York, at Luhring Augustine in 1995, his work has been the subject of gallery shows in Paris, Koln, Vienna, and Athens.  His work was spotlighted in the 1997 exhibition, Birth of the Cool:  American Painting from Georgia O’Keeffe to Christopher Wool, curated by Bice Curiger for the Kunsthaus, Zurich and the Deichtorhallen, Hamburg.

Currently, an important Wool painting is included in On the Edge:  Contemporary Art from the Werner and Elaine Dannheisser Collection at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

In July of 1998, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles will open a ten-year survey of Christopher Wool’s work, which will travel to the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh in the fall of 1998.  A major catalogue will be published by Scalo, Zurich, and the Museum of Contemporary Art.
