Steve Wolfe - - Exhibitions - Luhring Augustine

Steve Wolfe
November 1 - December 20, 2003
Opening reception: November 1, 6 - 8 p.m.

Luhring Augustine is pleased to announce an exhibition of works by Steve Wolfe, his first since 1996. In this exhibition, the artist presents a selection of works made over the past eight years, which have never before been exhibited together. In conjunction with this exhibition the gallery is publishing a catalog of Wolfe's work including 40 color illustrations and an introductory essay by Edmund White.

According to Mr. White, "Whereas Duchamp startled the world a century ago offering industrial bottle racks and urinals as artistic works of his own, Wolfe recreates existing mass-produced articles (mostly books and records from the sixties and seventies) in other materials (oil, screenprint, lithography, paper, wood, etc.) and in such a way that the originals and the copies are indistinguishable one from another (unless they are actually put side by side). The recreations take months to make, sometimes years, and involve typesetting, bronze casting, lacquering, various distressing and discoloring processes, etc.

The objects that Wolfe so painstakingly fashions in different media are not selected arbitrarily. They are the music and books about painting and the novels that constituted his own formation as a sensibility; they provide a record of his talismanic influences."

Wolfe's book, record, carton pieces and works on paper have been collected by some of the most prominent public and private collections. His work can been seen in the collections of The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, Dallas Museum of Art and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
