Jane Hammond - - Exhibitions - Luhring Augustine

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

JANE HAMMOND

MARCH 29 -  APRIL 26, 1997

Luhring Augustine is pleased to announce a one-person exhibition of Jane Hammond.  This will be the artist’s first show at the gallery since Luhring Augustine began representing her in 1995.

The artist will exhibit a group of ten large-scale paintings which continue the collaboration with the poet John Ashbery  begun in 1993. Hammond commissioned Ashbery to create a set of titles for which she would then subsequently create paintings, drawing upon a lexicon of 276 found images from various sources.  The paintings use Ashbery’s titles as catalysts and are meditations on a range of issues: female identity, cultural icons, family, childhood, language and thinking itself.

Jane Hammond has had numerous one-person exhibitions internationally.  Her work is housed in museum and private collections around the world including The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, The Albertina, Vienna,  The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Detroit Institute of Art.
